July

  • The Yellow Rattle rattles. After a couple of unsuccessful years I’ve finally got Yellow Rattle (Rhinanthus minor)
  • A few very hot days
  • Young robin (Erithacus rubecula)
  • Guelder Rose (Viburnum opulus)
  • Leaves already colouring on Rhus typhina (Stag’s horn sumach)
  • Poppies growing well and looking good amongst the herbs, where I don’t want them, and not growing at all in the grass, where I would like them
  • A Comma (Polygonia c-album). Took me a while to realise what it was
  • Teasel
  • Mr Mittens

March

  • Snowdrops beginning to fade
  • Took the bubble-wrap off the greenhouse. Much nicer
  • Experiment: Dig in last year’s Chervil into herb patch. Will it work as a green manure?
  • The flowering currant (Ribes sanguineum) looking good. Nice bright spring flowers
  • Forsythia bursting into yellow
  • A spring cut of the ‘meadow’. Let’s see if that helps the Yellow Rattle get a hold this year
  • Crocuses and Daffodils
  • Revamp of west wall – a couple of Cotoneaster horizontalis and a Ceanothus impressus Victoria might work better on that sunny wall
  • New lavender plants here and there
  • I now have a Cold Frame! Bought it from same place as greenhouse so assembly was quite familiar
  • White flowers of blackthorn appearing after a burst of sunshine
